Ovo Melody was inspired by a popular infant toy that features a ball rolling down a track. However, Guariglia and Lin took this concept to a whole new level by incorporating music into the design. By placing different nodes on the tracks, users can recreate familiar melodies or create their own unique compositions.
One of the standout features of Ovo Melody is its ability to switch between different instruments. The base station contains various instruments, such as a trumpet, piano, and guitar, allowing users to explore different sounds and musical styles. This versatility adds an element of fun and excitement to the toy, especially during these challenging times when staying at home has become the norm.
The technology behind Ovo Melody is equally impressive. Each node is equipped with a magnet of varying strength, while the ball contains a magnetic sensor. As the ball rolls over the nodes, it detects the magnetic field strength and translates it into musical notes. The data is then transmitted to the base station via Bluetooth, allowing the music to be played through the chosen instrument.
Measuring at 300mm in width, 80mm in depth, and 390mm in height, Ovo Melody is designed to be compact and portable, making it easy to enjoy music anywhere, anytime.
The Ovo Melody project began in 2019 in Taipei and is scheduled to be completed by December 2020. The design team, which includes engineers Chih Hung Hsu, Keng Ju Lin, Ray Peng, and Xerox Lin, has put in extensive research and development to ensure that the toy meets the needs of visually impaired individuals. The instructional cards provided with the toy feature braille notation, enabling visually impaired users to navigate the musical scores and attach the corresponding nodes to the tracks.
Overcoming the challenges of designing for visually impaired individuals was a crucial aspect of the project. The team meticulously positioned braille notations on each part of the toy, ensuring a seamless and accessible experience. By incorporating real tactile elements, Ovo Melody aims to make learning music easier and more enjoyable for visually impaired individuals.
Ovo Melody has already garnered recognition in the design community, receiving the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Toys, Games, and Hobby Products Design category in 2021. This award recognizes the toy's well-designed, practical, and innovative nature, meeting professional and industrial requirements. Ovo Melody's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world, providing fulfillment and positive feelings to its users.
With its unique blend of creativity, accessibility, and innovation, Ovo Melody is set to revolutionize the way we experience and create music. Whether you're a music enthusiast, a beginner, or a visually impaired individual, this toy offers a world of possibilities and endless joy.
